Some animals look normal. Others look like they came from a scary movie. These are the freakiest animals in the world, and the facts about them are even stranger than their looks. Get ready, because some of these will surprise you.
Quick Answer: What Are the Freakiest Animals in the World?
- Aye-aye: Taps on trees with a long, thin finger to find food
- Glass frog: You can see its heart beating through its skin
- Platypus: A mammal that lays eggs and has no stomach
- Surinam toad: Its babies come out of the skin on its back
1. Aye-Aye
The aye-aye lives in Madagascar. It has huge eyes, big ears, and one very long, thin middle finger.
At night, it taps on tree branches and listens for bugs inside. Then it digs them out with that finger. Its front teeth also never stop growing.
2. Star-Nosed Mole
This mole has a nose with 22 pink tentacles. It looks strange, but it works like a super finger.
The mole feels its food with the tentacles and can eat it in less than a quarter of a second. Also, it can smell under water by blowing tiny bubbles and sniffing them back in.
3. Glass Frog
The glass frog has see-through skin on its belly. You can look right through it and see its heart beating.
Here is the freakiest part. When it sleeps, it hides most of its red blood cells in its liver. Because of this, its body becomes almost clear, and hungry animals have trouble spotting it.
4. Platypus
A platypus has a duck-like bill, a beaver tail, and feet like an otter. It is a mammal, but it lays eggs.
It also has no stomach. Food goes straight from its throat to its gut. On top of that, the males have a venom spur on their back legs.
5. Surinam Toad
This flat toad looks like a dead leaf. Its mother has the strangest way to raise babies.
The eggs sink into the skin on her back. Then the baby toads grow there, and later they pop out of her skin, fully formed.
6. Texas Horned Lizard
This lizard looks like a tiny dinosaur. It has sharp horns and spiky skin.
When a dog or a coyote attacks it, it can shoot blood from its eyes. The blood can fly up to about 1.5 meters. It also tastes bad to many predators.
7. Bombardier Beetle
This small beetle looks harmless. But it carries a hot chemical spray inside its body.
When it is in danger, it mixes the chemicals in a tiny chamber. Then it shoots the spray from its back end. The spray can be as hot as boiling water.
8. Hagfish
The hagfish is a long, snake-like fish that lives deep in the sea. It has no jaws and almost no eyes.
When it is attacked, it makes a huge amount of slimy goo in seconds. The slime can clog the gills of other fish. It can even tie its body in a knot to get away.
9. Naked Mole-Rat
This pink, wrinkly animal lives under the ground in East Africa. It has tiny eyes and big front teeth.
It does not feel pain from acid, and it can live more than 30 years, which is very long for a small animal. Also, it almost never gets cancer.
10. Vampire Finch
The vampire finch is a small bird that lives on two remote Galápagos islands. It does something shocking.
It pecks at big seabirds called boobies and drinks their blood. This happens when food and water are hard to find on the islands.
11. Sea Pig
The sea pig is a deep-sea animal that looks like a pink pig made of jelly. It is really a type of sea cucumber.
It walks on the ocean floor on tiny legs called tube feet. Sometimes big groups of sea pigs walk together, looking for food on the mud.
12. Tarsier
The tarsier is a tiny primate from Southeast Asia. Each of its eyes is about as big as its whole brain.
Its eyes cannot move in their sockets. So it turns its head almost all the way around to look behind it.
Why Are Some Animals So Freaky?
Every strange body part has a job. Long fingers help find food. Clear skin helps hide. Hot spray and blood squirts help scare away enemies.
So, a freaky look is not a mistake. It is how that animal stays alive.
Conclusion
The freakiest animals in the world have strange bodies for good reasons. Their weird features help them eat, hide, and stay safe. Nature is much stranger than we think.
